AI Jesus Engages Visitors in Swiss Chapel Experiment
In a groundbreaking two-month experiment, researchers and religious leaders introduced an “AI Jesus” avatar to visitors at a Catholic chapel in Lucerne, Switzerland. The project, aimed at exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and religion, allowed participants to engage in conversations about faith, morality, and contemporary issues with a virtual representation of Jesus Christ.
The AI-powered avatar, utilizing OpenAI’s GPT-4o for response generation and Whisper for speech comprehension, conducted approximately 900 conversations during the experiment. Heygen’s AI video generator was employed to create the voice and visual representation of the virtual Jesus.
Participants from diverse religious backgrounds, including Christians, agnostics, atheists, Muslims, Buddhists, and Taoists, engaged with the AI Jesus in multiple languages. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, from love and the afterlife to controversial issues within the Catholic Church.
Chapel theologian Marco Schmid emphasized that the project was an artistic experiment, not intended to replace human interaction or traditional religious practices. “This is an opportunity for people to engage with faith in a new way, but it’s important to remember that it’s not a substitute for genuine spiritual experiences,” Schmid stated.
The Catholic Church has shown increasing interest in the implications of AI, appointing experts and exploring ethical guidelines for its use in religious contexts. However, public reactions to the AI Jesus project were mixed, with some viewing it as blasphemous.
Kenneth Cukier from “AI and Faith” highlighted the potential benefits of the AI Jesus in fostering personal and spiritual connections. “This technology could provide a unique avenue for individuals to explore their faith and engage in meaningful dialogue,” Cukier noted.
While the exhibit was a pilot project with no immediate plans for continuation, interest from various groups suggests potential for future iterations. As AI continues to evolve, its role in religious and spiritual contexts remains a topic of ongoing discussion and exploration.
