X Unveils Aurora: New AI Image Generator with Enhanced Realism
X has introduced a new AI image generator model called “Aurora,” offering users the ability to create more photorealistic imagery compared to previous iterations. The model, which maintains few restrictions on content generation, is now available as part of the “Grok 2 + Aurora beta” option in the Grok model selector.
Aurora follows X’s approach of open access, allowing all users to experiment with the technology. However, after a limited number of free queries, users will need to subscribe to X Premium to continue using the service.
The model’s capabilities extend to generating images of copyrighted characters and public figures, with examples including depictions of Mickey Mouse and a fictionalized Donald Trump. However, Aurora does draw the line at producing nude images.
TechCrunch’s investigation into Aurora’s abilities revealed both its strengths and limitations. While the model can create highly realistic imagery, it still exhibits noticeable anatomical and continuity issues. In one instance, AI-generated images of Ray Romano and Adam Sandler displayed peculiarities that highlighted the technology’s current constraints.
The introduction of Aurora represents the latest development in the rapidly evolving field of AI image generation. It also continues X’s trend of implementing minimal content restrictions across its AI models, raising questions about the potential implications of such open-ended technology.
As AI image generation continues to advance, Aurora’s debut marks another step forward in the quest for increasingly realistic and versatile artificial imagery.
