New “Tristan und Isolde” Production Debuts at Bayreuth Festival
A groundbreaking new production of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” has premiered at the 2024 Bayreuth Festival, under the direction of Icelandic theater artist Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson. The production, which opened on July 25, offers a fresh, psychoanalytic interpretation of the classic opera.
Arnarsson, who was personally invited by Katharina Wagner to create this new staging, drew inspiration from Carlos Kleiber’s 1982 recording and his own experiences in the Icelandic highlands. The production stars Andreas Schager as Tristan and Camilla Nylund as Isolde, with Semyon Bychkov conducting.
The staging presents a unique take on the legendary characters, aiming to make them more relatable to modern audiences. Nylund’s Isolde appears in a giant white dress, while Tristan dons an oxblood-colored garment symbolizing dried blood and wounds. The traditional love potion is replaced by a death draught, adding a new layer of complexity to the narrative.
Set designer Vytautas Narbutas has created abstract and symbolic settings that deviate from traditional representations. The first act features an open space with dangling ropes, while the second act resembles an estate sale filled with musical instruments. The final act’s set is described as a “cosmic monster devouring civilization and nature.”
Lighting designer Sascha Zauner employs stark lighting effects, including a distinctive yellow glow from discontinued sodium-vapor lamps. This adds to the production’s unique visual aesthetic.
The performance has not been without challenges. During the third performance, Schager struggled vocally and was partially replaced by cover Tilmann Unger, a change that caught even conductor Bychkov by surprise.
Despite these hurdles, the production has garnered attention for its innovative approach and strong performances. Christa Mayer as Brangäne, Olafur Sigurdarson, Günther Groissböck, and Birger Radde have all received praise for their contributions.
This new “Tristan und Isolde” will run for seven performances through August 26, with video from the opening night available on Stage+. As the Bayreuth Festival continues, this production stands out as a bold reimagining of Wagner’s timeless opera.
