The G7 Summit in Hiroshima is an important opportunity to address the global threat of nuclear weapons. The world’s leaders must not squander this moment and instead use it to make meaningful progress toward disarmament. Merle Spellerberg and Max Lucks, experts on international security, have argued that holding the summit in Hiroshima without making any tangible steps forward would be a political failure.
All states with nuclear capabilities need to come together at this meeting and agree on concrete measures that will reduce the risk of a catastrophic event occurring due to these weapons. This could include agreeing upon limits or bans on certain types of technology related to their development as well as signing treaties committing them not use such arms against each other or any other nation-state. Additionally, they should commit themselves to greater transparency when it comes to sharing information about their arsenals with one another so that everyone can be sure no one state has too much power over others through its possession of these arms alone.
Ultimately, if we are serious about reducing our reliance upon nuclear weaponry, then there needs to be a concerted effort from all sides at this summit for us to reach our goals safely and effectively before it is too late.
