It was a moment of surprise and delight for Finlay Glen, the film director when he received a mysterious letter that had been posted more than 100 years ago. The letter had been sent from London to an address in Crystal Palace in 1916 but it never reached its intended recipient. After being lost in the post for over a century, it finally arrived at its destination on April 25th this year.
Glen said there was something “weirdly moving” about receiving such an old piece of mail after all these years. He described how he opened up the envelope with some trepidation and found inside two letters written by his great-grandfather during World War One – one addressed to his grandmother and another to her sister who lived abroad at that time.
The contents of both letters were still legible despite their age; they contained information about family members who were serving overseas as well as news from home which would have been invaluable at that time given how difficult communication could be between countries compared with now. It is amazing to think what stories this little bundle of paper has seen during its long journey through history!
