Ukraine Unveils New River Drone to Counter Russian Vessels
Ukraine has developed a new river drone, the Black Widow 2, designed to target Russian vessels operating in rivers and narrow waterways. The drone, manufactured by Kyiv-based company Hard Cat, was unveiled at the Defense Tech Valley investment summit in Kyiv in October 2024.
The Black Widow 2 boasts impressive capabilities, including a maximum speed of nearly 25 miles per hour and a communication range of up to 6.2 miles. Its compact size and high maneuverability make it particularly effective for operations in confined waterways. The drone is equipped to target surface vessels and perform reconnaissance missions.
Development of the Black Widow 2 began in December 2023 at the request of the Ukrainian military. After successful testing in rear-area conditions, the drone is currently undergoing combat trials with two Ukrainian army brigades.
Drones have played a significant role in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, with Ukraine effectively using sea drones against Russia’s Black Sea fleet. The Black Widow 2 is expected to be primarily deployed on the Dnipro River, potentially serving a crucial role in defensive operations against Russian small vessels.
Experts have weighed in on the strategic importance of the new river drone. John Hardie suggests it could be used in defensive roles against Russian assault troops and supply lines. Basil Germond emphasizes the importance of targeting small boats supporting land operations, particularly in wet areas like the Dnipro Estuary.
As the conflict continues to evolve, the introduction of the Black Widow 2 river drone represents Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to innovate and adapt its military capabilities in response to the changing nature of warfare.
