As Sino-American relations worsen, U.S. CEOs like Jamie Dimon and Elon Musk are traveling to China this week despite the G7’s call for a strategy to diversify away from the country. The purpose of their visit is unclear, but it could be an attempt to improve relations between the two countries or even explore new business opportunities in light of increasing trade tensions between them.
Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co., has long been a proponent for closer ties with China and has previously visited Beijing multiple times over the years as part of his efforts at strengthening economic cooperation between both nations. Similarly, Tesla Inc.’s Musk also recently traveled there on several occasions as he seeks to expand his company’s presence in one of its largest markets outside America.
The visits come at a time when American companies are increasingly feeling pressure from Chinese tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration last year and more recently from sanctions against Huawei Technologies Co Ltd that have disrupted global supply chains across many industries, including technology and finance sectors where these CEOs operate within respectively. Ultimately though only time will tell if their trips will help ease tensions or further complicate matters going forward between both countries moving ahead into 2020.
