President Trump Signs Executive Order to Combat Ticket Scalping
In a move aimed at curbing ticket scalping in the live entertainment industry, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting “unscrupulous middle-men” who resell tickets at exorbitant markups. The signing ceremony, attended by musician Kid Rock, underscored the administration’s commitment to addressing the widespread issue of automated bots purchasing large quantities of tickets.
The executive order focuses on enforcing the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act of 2016, which prohibits the use of software to circumvent purchasing limits on ticketing websites. President Trump promised rigorous enforcement to tackle exploitative ticket scalping practices that have plagued the industry for years.
Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, was present at the signing and voiced his support for the executive order. The artist emphasized the detrimental impact of bots on both performers and fans, expressing gratitude to President Trump for taking swift action on the matter.
The live entertainment industry has long grappled with the challenge of bots overwhelming ticketing systems. High-profile incidents, such as the presale for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, have brought this issue into sharp focus. During that event, an unprecedented 14 million people, including bots, attempted to purchase tickets, causing system-wide disruptions.
This executive order is part of ongoing governmental efforts to address ticketing issues. In 2023, the Senate Judiciary Committee closely monitored ticket sales for Beyoncé’s tour, while the IRS introduced legislation requiring ticketing platforms to report sellers earning over $600.
The executive order represents a significant step towards reforming the ticketing industry, aiming to protect both fans and artists from unfair ticket resale practices. It also reflects the government’s continued interest in regulating the live entertainment sector to ensure fairness and accessibility for all stakeholders.
