Trump Praises “Amazing” Woman Who Aided in Capture of Alleged Gunman
Former President Donald Trump lauded the actions of a quick-thinking woman motorist who played a crucial role in the capture of a suspect following an apparent assassination attempt at his Florida golf club.
During a town hall event in Flint, Michigan, Trump recounted the incident, which occurred at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. According to the former president, Secret Service agents spotted the muzzle of a rifle protruding from nearby shrubbery while he was playing golf. An agent fired in the direction of the apparent sniper’s nest, causing the suspect to flee.
Trump praised the actions of an unidentified woman who became suspicious after observing the suspect hurriedly leaving the scene. “She followed him and took pictures of his license plate,” Trump explained, describing her as “really amazing.” The woman promptly shared the images with authorities, aiding in the swift apprehension of the suspect.
Less than an hour after the incident, law enforcement arrested 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh in an SUV traveling northbound on I-95. Routh appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obstructed serial number. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
This event marks the second apparent assassination attempt targeting Trump in recent months, adding to the heightened security concerns surrounding the former president as the 2024 US election approaches.
Trump expressed his gratitude towards the Secret Service for their rapid response and shared his desire to meet the woman who assisted in the suspect’s capture. In a lighthearted moment, he quipped, “Women are smarter than men.”
As investigations continue, this incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by high-profile political figures in the United States.
