Search Continues for Last Missing Person in Sicilian Yacht Tragedy
Rescue teams are currently scouring the waters near Palermo, Sicily, in search of the last missing person from the luxury yacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast on August 19. The vessel, owned by the late British tech billionaire Mike Lynch, met with tragedy during stormy weather, resulting in seven fatalities.
Among the deceased was Christopher Morvillo, Lynch’s top lawyer, whose LinkedIn post from two months prior has taken on a chilling significance. Celebrating Lynch’s acquittal, Morvillo wrote, “They all lived happily ever after,” expressing joy over the legal victory and gratitude to his colleagues and family.
The Bayesian, carrying 22 people, encountered severe weather conditions near Palermo. While 15 individuals were rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares and the ship’s captain James Cutfield, seven lost their lives. The casualties included Mike Lynch himself, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morvillo’s wife Neda, and Morgan Stanley International Chair Jonathan Bloomer.
In a tragic coincidence, Lynch’s co-defendant in a fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died in a separate incident just two days before the yacht sank.
As the search continues, representatives for Morvillo at Clifford Chance have not yet responded to requests for comment. The incident has sent shockwaves through the tech and legal communities, highlighting the unpredictable nature of maritime travel even for the world’s elite.
