Tinder Launches AI-Powered Flirting Game in Partnership with OpenAI
Dating app Tinder has unveiled a new AI-powered voice-activated flirting game called “Game Game” in collaboration with OpenAI. The feature, which utilizes OpenAI’s voice mode and GPT-4 reasoning model, simulates meet-cute scenarios and awards points for effective flirting.
Spencer Rascoff, CEO of Tinder’s parent company Match Group, recently demonstrated the game in an Instagram video. The interaction showcased both the game’s potential and its current limitations, as Rascoff engaged with an AI character named “Mila” in a conversation that highlighted some awkward moments and technical issues.
Hillary Paine, Tinder’s VP of Growth and Product, explained that the game’s awkwardness is an intentional design choice. According to a 2023 Tinder survey, 64% of young singles are open to awkward interactions if they lead to genuine connections. The game aims to provide a humorous and low-pressure environment for users to practice their flirting skills.
However, early testing has revealed some technical challenges. A reporter from Futurism experienced glitches during gameplay, including instances where the AI responded to its own audio. Despite these issues, Tinder appears to be pushing forward with the feature, likely hoping to drive user engagement through this novel approach.
Tinder has assured users that voice data collected during gameplay will not be used to train new AI models, addressing potential privacy concerns.
The introduction of “Game Game” reflects Tinder’s strategy to keep users engaged through innovative features, even if they come with initial technical hurdles. As AI continues to integrate into various aspects of online dating, it remains to be seen how users will respond to these new, AI-driven interactions.
