The US dollar has become increasingly scarce in Bolivia, threatening the country’s ‘economic miracle’. Sofia Andrade, a lawyer from La Paz, recently chose to withdraw all her savings held in dollars from the bank. She explained that she prefers to have them at home rather than risk their value decreasing due to the scarcity of dollars on Bolivian streets.
This is just one example of how Bolivians are responding to this currency crisis. Many people are turning away from using or holding onto US Dollars and instead opting for other currencies, such as Euros or Argentine Pesos, which can be exchanged more easily and with less risk involved. This shift away from using USD could potentially put an end to Bolivia’s economic growth if it continues over a long period without any intervention by authorities or financial institutions.
The government has been trying its best to combat this issue but so far there hasn’t been much progress made toward resolving it completely. For Bolivia’s economy not only to survive but also to continue growing despite these difficult times, measures must be taken soon by both public and private sectors alike to ensure that citizens can access stable foreign currencies whenever they need them without having fear about their value being compromised.
