Oregon and 16 other states are calling for a federal recall of Kia and Hyundai vehicles due to their ease of theft. Many cars sold by these brands in the US over the last 10 years lack an engine immobilizer, which is essential in preventing car theft. Videos circulating on social media have demonstrated how someone can start one of these cars with only a screwdriver and USB cord, making them incredibly vulnerable to break-ins.
Law enforcement agencies from Oregon and other affected states are urging consumers to be aware that this issue exists when considering buying or leasing any Kia or Hyundai vehicle without an engine immobilizer installed. They also recommend taking extra security measures, such as parking in well-lit areas, and using anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks, alarm systems, or tracking devices if possible; all methods have proven effective at deterring criminals from stealing vehicles equipped with no engine immobilizers.
Kia Motors America has stated that it will work closely with NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) regarding this matter but declined further comment until more information was available about what kind of action would be taken moving forward by both parties involved.
