Fall Colors Set to Dazzle Across Northern U.S.
As autumn returns, the northern United States is gearing up for a spectacular display of fall foliage, drawing leaf enthusiasts and contributing billions to local economies. AccuWeather predicts an especially vibrant season in the Midwest, including Michigan and Illinois, while Upstate New York and parts of Pennsylvania are also expected to showcase powerful colors.
Maine, the nation’s most forested state, is anticipating a breathtaking foliage season. Gale Ross, Maine’s fall foliage spokesperson, notes that ideal conditions of sunshine and rainfall have set the stage for an impressive display. Aaron Bergdahl, Maine’s forest pathologist, adds that excellent tree health and resilience will further enhance the spectacle.
The timing of peak foliage varies across the country. In Maine, it can begin as early as late September in the north and extend to Halloween in coastal areas. The transformation is triggered by cooler temperatures and reduced sunlight, which break down chlorophyll in leaves.
However, climate change has disrupted recent leaf-peeping seasons. Warming trends have led to droughts, heat waves, and extreme weather events affecting foliage. In 2021, a heatwave in the Pacific Northwest caused “foliage scorch,” impacting the usual autumn display.
Despite these challenges, tourism related to fall foliage remains strong. New Hampshire expects about 3.7 million visitors this season, more than twice its population. Lori Harnois, NH Travel and Tourism Director, emphasizes the global appeal of New England’s fall colors.
As September draws to a close, northern Maine is already experiencing moderate color change, with the rest of the state expected to follow suit in the coming weeks. Leaf enthusiasts and casual observers alike are encouraged to plan their visits accordingly to witness nature’s annual color show at its peak.
