SpaceX’s Starbase Seeks City Status, Expanding Musk’s Texas Footprint
SpaceX’s presence on the Texas coast, which began a decade ago, has brought significant changes to the region, creating jobs and transforming Boca Chica Beach into a hub for rocket launches. Now, the area known as Starbase is taking steps towards becoming an incorporated city, a move that could further reshape the local landscape.
Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO, recently announced on social media that the company’s headquarters will be located in Starbase, Texas. This declaration has set in motion a formal process to establish the site as an official city.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. confirmed that SpaceX has submitted a petition to incorporate Starbase as a city. The county’s legal and elections administration is now reviewing the petition to ensure it meets all statutory requirements. If approved, the county elections department will establish the jurisdiction and plan for a vote.
The proposed city of Starbase would be situated in Cameron County, which has a population of approximately 426,000. While the exact number of potential residents for the new city is unknown, over 3,400 SpaceX employees and contractors currently work at the site.
Incorporation would bring significant changes to the area, including the creation of a city charter, provision of municipal services, establishment of ordinances, and the authority to levy taxes. SpaceX argues that city status would facilitate growth and development, making the area more attractive for current and prospective workers.
However, the move is not without opposition. Local environmental group Save RGV has raised concerns about the impact on the surrounding ecosystem and has filed lawsuits against SpaceX. Questions also remain about how incorporation would affect regulation and oversight by the county.
This potential new city is part of a larger trend of Elon Musk expanding his business operations in Texas. Citing the state’s favorable business environment, Musk has already relocated Tesla’s headquarters to the state, with a Gigafactory near Austin producing Cybertrucks. The Boring Co. has also moved to Bastrop, Texas, where Musk envisions creating a “Texas utopia” for employees.
In recent developments, Musk and Texas Governor Greg Abbott initiated a Tesla lithium refinery project near Corpus Christi. Additionally, in September, Musk moved the headquarters of X (formerly Twitter) from San Francisco to Bastrop, Texas.
As the process unfolds, the potential incorporation of Starbase as a city represents another significant step in Musk’s growing Texas footprint, with implications for local governance, economic development, and the future of space exploration in the Lone Star State.
