South Korea Considers Arming Ukraine as North Korea-Russia Ties Deepen
South Korea is contemplating supplying weapons to Ukraine in response to allegations that North Korea has sent troops to support Russia’s military operations. This potential shift in policy comes as Seoul’s National Security Council condemns North Korea’s actions, describing the regime as a “criminal group” forcing its youth into mercenary roles.
The South Korean government is reportedly preparing phased countermeasures linked to the growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. These measures could include diplomatic, economic, and military responses, with the possibility of sending both defensive and offensive weapons to Ukraine.
South Korea’s primary concern stems from the potential security threats posed by this alliance. Intelligence sources suggest that North Korea may be pursuing high-tech Russian technologies to enhance its nuclear missile capabilities, as well as modernize its conventional weapons and space surveillance systems.
Until now, South Korea has participated in U.S.-led sanctions against Russia and provided humanitarian and financial support to Ukraine. However, it has avoided direct arms supply due to existing policy constraints.
The South Korean spy agency has reportedly confirmed the dispatch of North Korean troops to Russia, while Ukrainian intelligence claims that up to 10,000 North Korean soldiers are being prepared for deployment.
This development follows two years of intensified cooperation between North Korea and Russia, culminating in a major defense deal signed in June for mutual military assistance.
Both North Korea and Russia have vehemently denied these allegations. Russia’s U.N. Ambassador dismissed the claims as scaremongering, while a North Korean diplomat called the troop dispatch rumors groundless.
The international community remains divided on the issue. Kim Jong Un’s sister has criticized South Korea and Ukraine for their stance, while the U.S. and NATO have not confirmed the troop deployment. However, the U.S. deputy ambassador to the U.N. has expressed concern over the potential dispatch of North Korean troops to Ukraine.
As tensions escalate, South Korea’s potential decision to supply arms to Ukraine could mark a significant shift in its foreign policy and its role in the ongoing conflict.
