When asked about the potential for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to replace screenwriters at Cannes on Friday, Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn didn’t hold back. He called it a “human obscenity”. His comments come as AI technology is increasingly being used in creative industries, such as film and television production.
Penn believes that using AI to write scripts would be a disservice not only to writers but also audiences who rely on human creativity and emotion when watching films or TV shows. He argued that while machines can create content quickly and efficiently, they lack the ability of humans to convey complex emotions through storytelling, which is essential for entertainment media.
The actor went on further explain how he views writing as an art form rather than just another job like any other profession where automation could be implemented without consequence; “It’s not something you should ever think of replacing with machines,” he said during his speech at Cannes Film Festival 2019.”We are all here because we love stories…stories told by people who have put their hearts into them.”
