We had the pleasure of speaking with Kathy Goodman, the founder of Weigh Less Health Center, a personalized medical weight loss center in Southern California. Kathy has over 25 years of experience in healthcare, with the last nine years focused on bariatric medicine. She shares with us her journey, the inspiration behind her business, the challenges she faced, and the impact her services have had on her clients. Join us as we dive into the world of sustainable weight loss and learn more about Kathy’s passion for improving health through simple and natural methods.
Kathy, thank you so much for joining us today. Can you tell us a little bit about your company and what you do?
Our office provides eight types of medication to accelerate weight loss. Members return every 1-2 weeks if weight loss is less than expected and the prescription medication is adjusted or changed accordingly. Additionally, we offer The Weigh-Less Wellness Coach Certification Kit & Your Health Boutique, a small home-based business opportunity for members to teach improved health and weight loss from their own homes.
That’s an interesting approach! What inspired you to start your company?
During my 25 years of experience in health care, I was amazed to discover that weight loss could improve over 25 medical conditions more quickly and effectively than the medications we were prescribing. I learned several important factors through working in medical weight loss offices and listening to our patients. I became passionate about spreading the news about the benefits of weight loss and decided to start Weigh Less Health Center to prove that weight loss improves health and can be simple.
Wow, that’s quite the journey! What were the greatest challenges you’ve faced when starting out?
My greatest challenge was quitting my reliable and well-paying job to focus on opening Weigh Less Health Center without getting paid, all for the sake of proving my point about weight loss and health improvement.
It must have been tough to take that leap of faith. Do you feel there are fundamental differences between different generations when using your product or service?
We have weight loss members of all ages, comprising 10% of our clientele. I think the most difficult group to convince is the younger generation, who tend to believe everything they find on Google.
Interesting! How do you differentiate yourself from competitors?
We offer bariatric medication to accelerate weight loss and ensure the prescription is effective before refilling it each week.
Do you have any plans to extend to other countries or markets?
Yes, I would like to offer our Weigh-Less Wellness Coach Certification Kit & Your Health Boutique worldwide, as the Weigh-Less 2-Step Plan can be followed anywhere, and coaching can be taught in any language.
That’s an exciting goal, and it seems like it has the potential to capture a global market! What strategies do you use to overcome stress and the inevitable roadblocks to moving forward?
I am working on becoming more comfortable with operating online, as I’m an older adult who did not grow up with computers.
It’s always inspiring to see entrepreneurs adapt to a changing business climate. Which target market would be ideal for your product or service?
I would like to transition our business to online only.
That seems to be the direction commerce is heading, lower overhead and a farther reach of customers. What has the overall feedback been from customers regarding your products?
Feedback has been fantastic. We feel fortunate to have supported a business through word of mouth, especially since many people don’t want to share that they were on a diet or used medication for weight loss.
That’s a great point, as it certainly is something people aren’t willing to share so openly! Who has been your greatest source of inspiration?
Our successful members who visit years later, not having gained back any lost weight.
A shining example of product success! What are or were your greatest fears when starting up or moving forward?
I view ‘fears’ as challenges.
How have recent economic events affected your business, and what have you done to adapt?
COVID-19 regulations began within a year of opening Weigh Less. I was concerned that members working from home and having their kids home all day would make weight loss impossible, considering the average American gained 1-2 pounds monthly during the pandemic.
Certainly an aspect of the pandemic to be concerned about, given the shifting priorities. Which aspects of your product are you most proud of and why?
I’m proud to know that every member became healthier, happier, and more energetic as they lost weight.
That is definitely something that would put a smile on my face! What advice would you give to your past self or a new entrepreneur?
Expect everything you’ve planned to cost twice as much, take twice as long, and require twice as much energy. However, try to find time for yourself, your friends, and your family.
Fantastic advice! Kathy, thank you so much for your time today. Where can readers learn more about Weigh Less and the products you offer?
