Rhea Space Activity, a startup space exploration company, has announced an ambitious mission to “resurrect” NASA’s derelict Spitzer Space Telescope. The telescope was launched in 2003 and is still operational but its infrared detectors have been rendered obsolete by the James Webb Telescope, which will be launching soon.
Rhea Space Activity plans to launch a spacecraft that will rendezvous with the telescope and replace its outdated infrared detectors with modern ones. This would allow the Spitzer to continue operating as if it were brand new, allowing scientists access to data from both telescopes simultaneously for comparison purposes.
The mission is expected to cost around 100 million dollars and Rhea hopes that military funding can help make this project possible so they can extend their research capabilities beyond what current technology allows them. If successful, this could open up many possibilities for future space exploration projects involving older satellites or probes that may otherwise become unusable due to technological obsolescence or lack of resources needed for repairs or upgrades.
