The new movie, ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’, starring Russell Crowe is based on the true story of Rev. Gabriele Amorth, otherwise known as the “James Bond of exorcists”. The film follows his journey from being appointed chief exorcist of the Diocese of Rome in 1986 to his death 30 years later.
Rev. Gabriele Amorth was a renowned figure in Italy and around the world for his work with demonic possessions and exorcisms throughout his career. He believed that all evil came from Satan himself and he devoted much time to studying demonology while working as an official Vatican-approved Catholic priest at San Giovanni Rotondo church in Rome from 1959 until 2000 when he retired due to health issues related to old age.
During this period, Rev Gabriel had performed over 70 000 exorcisms – more than any other person ever recorded – helping many people who were suffering from various forms of mental illness or spiritual possession; including those inflicted by curses or spells cast by witches or magicians! His dedication earned him respect amongst both religious leaders and laypeople alike; even earning him nicknames, such as “the pope’s right-hand man” or “the James Bond of Exorcists”!
Russell Crowe has done justice portraying this incredible character on the screen, which will surely be appreciated by fans across generations!
