Retroid Pocket Mini Faces Display Issues, Offers Limited Returns
Retroid, the manufacturer of popular handheld gaming devices, has encountered a significant setback with its latest product, the Retroid Pocket Mini. The company has confirmed an unfixable graphical issue affecting emulated games on the device, specifically related to scanline and pixel grid shaders. This problem has a notable impact on the appearance of classic games originally designed for CRT displays.
In response to the growing concerns, Retroid made an announcement on their Discord channel outlining a return policy for affected customers. The company has set a narrow window for returns from March 8th to March 14th, with a cap of 200 returns for customers residing outside of China. Retroid has acknowledged that they are unable to resolve the issue, which results in misplaced scanlines, uneven pixels, and distorted images.
The return process comes with certain conditions. Customers are required to cover the initial shipping costs, though Retroid has promised to reimburse these expenses. Additionally, the company is offering a $10 stackable coupon for future handheld purchases as compensation. Retroid has stated that this return campaign will be costly, anticipating return requests beyond just screen-related issues.
Industry expert Russ from Retro Game Corps commented on Reddit about the challenges Retroid faces as a small company, highlighting the financial implications of managing returns and covering shipping costs. The situation has left many gamers who purchased the device specifically for retro gaming disappointed with the display’s performance, particularly when it comes to classic emulation effects.
This development raises questions about quality control in the rapidly growing retro handheld market and may impact consumer trust in future Retroid products.
