Plex Unveils New TV and Movie Review Feature Following $40 Million Fundraise

Streaming media platform Plex has announced the introduction of a new TV show and movie review feature, following a recent $40 million fundraising round. This latest addition to the platform’s offerings aims to compete with popular apps like Letterboxd and TV Time, while further expanding Plex’s social networking capabilities.

The new feature integrates social elements, allowing users to share reviews with friends and friends of friends on the Plex platform. This move builds upon Plex’s foray into social networking, which began last year with the launch of the “Discover Together” feature. The earlier update introduced user-profiles and the ability to follow friends, facilitating the sharing and discovery of new content within the Plex community.

Initially, the review-sharing feature will be limited to a user’s network of friends, with plans to expand sharing capabilities to all Plex users in future updates. The company is currently seeking beta testers for the new feature, which requires a verified email address to access.

Users will be able to create reviews through both the web interface and mobile apps. For those with Personal Media libraries, the Sync Watch State & Ratings feature will enable reviews for this content as well. All reviews will be subject to Plex’s Community Guidelines to maintain a positive user experience.

To address privacy concerns, Plex has introduced a new “Ratings and Reviews” option in the Account settings. This allows users to customize their experience by choosing to view reviews from all Plex users and critics, users only, critics only, or no one. The company emphasizes that existing privacy settings will remain intact.

This update comes in the wake of previous privacy issues surrounding the Discover Together feature, which was initially implemented as an opt-out rather than an opt-in option. Some users expressed concerns about the potential leaking of personal viewing habits.

As Plex continues to evolve its platform, the new review feature represents another step towards creating a comprehensive streaming community. With its recent funding boost and ongoing feature development, Plex aims to solidify its position in the competitive streaming media landscape.
