Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, recently slammed Tesla’s Autopilot technology as misleading and potentially dangerous for drivers. In a recent interview with CNBC, he said that while autonomous vehicles have made great strides in safety and convenience over the past few years, they are still not ready to be used without driver supervision.
Buttigieg went on to criticize Tesla CEO Elon Musk for what he perceives as an overly optimistic view of autonomous vehicle technology: “It is important that people understand there is no such thing yet as a self-driving car,” he said. “We need to make sure we don’t have any false promises or expectations about where this technology stands.”
The tension between Musk and Buttigieg has been growing since last summer when the Department of Transportation released new guidelines for automated vehicles, which were seen by many industry experts as being too restrictive on innovation in this space. Since then both parties have engaged in several public spats over their respective views on how best to regulate these technologies going forward – making it clear that they remain at odds with each other regarding how best to move forward with autonomy development initiatives in America today.
