Blizzard Entertainment Brings Back 6v6 Matches in Overwatch 2
Blizzard Entertainment has announced plans to reintroduce 6v6 matches in Overwatch 2 for testing in the upcoming season. This move marks a significant shift from the current 5v5 format, aiming to enhance core gameplay by allowing multiple tank characters per team. The 6v6 format will not replace the existing 5v5 setup but will be offered as an additional option for players.
Aaron Keller, the game director for Overwatch 2, acknowledged the appeal of the 5v5 format to new players while expressing the team’s goal to replicate its success within the 6v6 structure. Keller had previously highlighted challenges associated with 6v6 gameplay, including hero balancing and game performance issues.
To address these concerns, Blizzard is implementing several adjustments, including reducing tank survivability and power. The development team is also focusing on ensuring quick matchmaking despite the potential division of the player base between the two formats.
Season 14 will feature two distinct 6v6 test phases. The first test will introduce an “Open Queue” format with role restrictions: one tank, one damage, one support, and up to three of any role. Players will have the flexibility to switch roles during matches. The second test will allow two players per role per team.
Before the 6v6 tests, Season 13 will see a separate 5v5 test with a maximum of two players per role. In this iteration, tanks will be less powerful compared to previous versions.
The community has expressed mixed reactions to these changes. Richard Lawler, an avid Overwatch player, noted that the removal of one tank in 5v5 had simplified the game. However, concerns persist that the game outcome may become overly dependent on the tank role.
As Blizzard continues to evolve Overwatch 2, these upcoming tests will provide valuable insights into player preferences and gameplay dynamics, potentially shaping the future direction of the popular team-based shooter.
