New York Magazine and Reporter Olivia Nuzzi Part Ways Amid Controversy
New York magazine and political reporter Olivia Nuzzi have announced their mutual decision to end their professional relationship. The split comes in the wake of reports detailing Nuzzi’s digital relationship with a source during her coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign.
Following the emergence of these reports, New York magazine conducted an internal review and enlisted an external law firm to investigate the matter. The investigations found no issues with the accuracy or bias in Nuzzi’s reporting. Despite this, both parties agreed that parting ways was the most appropriate course of action.
While Nuzzi has not confirmed the identity of the individual involved, reports have identified Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the person in question. Kennedy has stated that he had only met Nuzzi once. David Haskell, editor of New York magazine, noted that the relationship began after Nuzzi’s November profile on Kennedy and reportedly ended in August.
In a statement addressing the situation, Nuzzi acknowledged the personal nature of her communication with a former reporting subject. She clarified that she did not report on the subject or use them as a source during the relationship. Nuzzi expressed regret for not disclosing the relationship to prevent the appearance of a conflict of interest and apologized to her colleagues and those disappointed by her actions.
New York magazine responded to the situation, stating that had they been aware of the relationship, Nuzzi would not have been permitted to cover the presidential campaign. The magazine expressed pride in publishing Nuzzi’s work over nearly eight years and wished her the best in her future endeavors.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in maintaining professional boundaries and transparency in their reporting relationships.
