Microsoft’s recently introduced AI-powered “Recall” feature, designed to enhance user productivity, has come under scrutiny for potentially compromising user privacy. An investigation by Tom’s Hardware has revealed significant shortcomings in the tool’s ability to protect sensitive information, despite claims to the contrary.
The “Recall” feature, part of Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system, aims to provide users with a comprehensive history of their digital activities. However, the tool has been found to capture sensitive data such as credit card numbers and social security numbers, even when the “filter sensitive information” setting is enabled.
Avram Piltch of Tom’s Hardware demonstrated the tool’s limitations by entering various types of sensitive information across different platforms. While the feature successfully filtered some data when used on specific online stores, it failed to identify and protect all instances of sensitive information in common real-world scenarios.
Initially announced with much fanfare, the “Recall” feature faced immediate backlash from privacy advocates and users concerned about potential security risks. The controversy led Microsoft to reverse its plans for a widespread rollout, instead limiting the feature to Windows Insider Program participants.
