Microsoft Launches Xbox Game Pass Standard, Expanding Subscription Options
Microsoft has officially launched its new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier today, priced at $14.99 per month. This latest addition to the Game Pass family offers subscribers access to the extensive Game Pass library for Xbox consoles and includes online multiplayer capabilities. However, it does not provide immediate access to day-one game releases, a feature reserved for higher-tier subscriptions.
The introduction of Xbox Game Pass Standard comes as part of a broader restructuring of Microsoft’s gaming subscription services, first revealed in July. This announcement coincided with price increases for Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. Notably, existing Xbox Game Pass for Console subscribers will retain their current benefits, including access to day-one game releases.
Microsoft has clarified that while Xbox Game Pass Standard will eventually include new first-party Xbox games and other titles, some games available on Game Pass Ultimate may take up to 12 months or more to be added to the Standard tier. For new subscribers seeking immediate access to day-one titles, PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate remain the options of choice.
The new Game Pass lineup now consists of four tiers:
- Xbox Game Pass Core ($9.99/month): Offers over 25 games, online console multiplayer, and deals and discounts.
- Xbox Game Pass Standard ($14.99/month): Provides hundreds of games, online console multiplayer, and deals and discounts.
- PC Game Pass ($11.99/month): Includes hundreds of games, recent day-one titles, EA Play, and deals and discounts.
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate ($19.99/month): Features hundreds of games, recent day-one titles, EA Play, online console multiplayer, and additional deals, discounts, and perks.
The launch of Xbox Game Pass Standard is timely, arriving just ahead of the highly anticipated release of “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” on Game Pass in October. This strategic move by Microsoft aims to provide gamers with more flexible subscription options while maintaining the appeal of its premium tiers.
As the gaming subscription landscape continues to evolve, Microsoft’s latest offering demonstrates its commitment to adapting to consumer preferences and market demands in the competitive world of digital gaming services.
