Microsoft Unveils New Gamepad Keyboard for Windows 11
Microsoft has announced the introduction of a new gamepad keyboard for Windows 11, designed to enhance the on-screen keyboard experience for users of Xbox controllers. This innovative feature simplifies navigation and typing into text fields across the Windows 11 platform using an Xbox controller.
The gamepad keyboard incorporates shortcuts specifically tailored for Xbox controllers. The X button functions as a backspace, while the Y button serves as the spacebar. Additionally, the menu button acts as the enter key. These shortcuts align with those used in the Xbox dashboard, ensuring consistency across platforms.
This development is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to enhance Windows for handheld gaming PCs, aiming to merge the best features of Windows and Xbox. The focus is on improving navigation with a controller, making the Windows experience more seamless for gamers.
In addition to the gamepad keyboard, Microsoft has implemented several other updates and improvements. The Game Bar in Windows has been optimized for handheld devices with a compact mode, and the Xbox app for PC received controller navigation improvements last year. The gamepad keyboard itself underwent beta testing in September.
The new feature is currently available in the Release Preview version of Windows 11 and is expected to roll out to all Windows 11 users shortly. Users who opt into the latest non-security updates can expect to access the gamepad keyboard within days.
This update represents a significant step in Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to integrate gaming features more deeply into the Windows operating system, potentially changing how users interact with their PCs when using controllers.
