Israeli Air Force Intercepts Hezbollah UAV, Launches Pre-emptive Strikes
In a significant escalation of tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, Israeli air forces intercepted a Hezbollah unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over northern Israel on Thursday. This incident was followed by Israel carrying out what it described as “pre-emptive” airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strikes were in response to intelligence indicating Hezbollah was preparing to launch attacks on Israeli territory. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesperson, emphasized that these actions were taken in self-defense to neutralize imminent threats.
In retaliation, Hezbollah announced it had fired 320 Katyusha rockets at 11 military sites in Israel. The militant group claimed this was the “first phase” of a planned attack, following the recent killing of Fuad Shukr, a high-ranking Hezbollah commander.
The IDF reported that over 150 projectiles were launched from Lebanon towards Israeli territory. In response, the Israeli Air Force deployed approximately 100 fighter jets, reportedly striking and eliminating thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels.
As tensions escalated, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a 48-hour state of emergency across the nation. Gallant stressed the importance of avoiding regional escalation and mentioned ongoing collaboration with the United States for defense and regional stability.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the situation, stating that the IDF had successfully destroyed thousands of short-range rockets. He warned that the situation in the north is evolving, hinting at potential further actions.
The involvement of key figures such as Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s general secretary, and Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Supreme Leader, underscores the complex regional dynamics at play.
This recent flare-up has heightened fears of a potential all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, highlighting the ongoing instability in the region and the potential for further conflict.
As the situation continues to develop, international observers remain watchful of any signs of further escalation or diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions.
