Humanoid Origin, Game Studio Founded by BioWare Veteran, Shuts Down
Humanoid Origin, the game studio established by industry veteran Casey Hudson, has announced its closure due to an unexpected funding shortfall. The news was shared on the company’s LinkedIn page, marking the end of the studio’s brief existence since its founding in 2021.
Casey Hudson, known for his 20-year tenure at BioWare where he worked on iconic titles such as Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, founded Humanoid Origin (initially named Humanoid Studios) after leaving BioWare in 2020. Hudson’s career also included a brief stint at Microsoft Studios before returning to BioWare in 2017.
In 2022, Humanoid Origin announced its first project, described as a multi-platform AAA title set in a new science fiction universe. The game was said to feature a character-driven narrative, though details remained scarce beyond concept art releases.
The closure of Humanoid Origin adds to a concerning trend in the gaming industry, which has seen over 23,000 job losses in the past two years. This year alone has witnessed the shuttering of several notable studios, including Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Firewalk Studios.
Despite efforts to protect the studio, Humanoid Origin was unable to overcome its financial challenges, bringing an abrupt end to its ambitious plans in the competitive gaming landscape.
