Researchers have recently confirmed that even tiny amounts of plastic can cause horrific problems in chicken embryos. In a study conducted by scientists from the University of Georgia, nanoplastics were injected into chicken embryos and observed for any changes or malformations. The results showed that these microscopic particles caused severe deformities such as missing limbs, underdeveloped organs, and growth defects in baby chicks.
The researchers noted that this is likely due to the way plastics interact with hormones during embryonic development; when exposed to certain chemicals found in plastics, hormones are disrupted which leads to abnormal cell division resulting in malformations. This research has far-reaching implications not only for chickens but also for other species including humans who may be exposed to similar levels of plastic pollution through air or water sources contaminated with microplastics.
It is clear from this study that we must take drastic measures now if we want future generations – both human and animal – to remain healthy and free from harm caused by our current reliance on single-use plastic products like straws, bags, bottles, etc. We need more stringent regulations regarding plastic production as well as increased public education about how our daily choices impact wildlife populations around us.
