Former Hollywood Makeup Artist Pivots to Career Coach, Launches Podcast
Alexis Walker, a longtime makeup artist turned career pivot coach, is making waves with her new venture, The Hollywood Second Act Podcast. Walker, who transitioned out of the entertainment industry during the pandemic, now helps others leverage their skills for new opportunities.
Walker’s journey began with a background in psychology and aspirations of becoming a counselor. However, a family tragedy led her to pursue makeup artistry as a creative outlet and means of connection. She moved to Los Angeles, enrolling in an intensive makeup program and working her way up through low-paying jobs and makeup counter positions.
After six years of perseverance, Walker achieved union membership, marking a significant milestone in her career. She went on to work with industry icons like Norman Lear and Garry Marshall. However, the demanding nature of the industry began to take its toll, prompting Walker to question her career path as she aged.
The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed change, leading Walker to explore new career options. The recent strikes in the entertainment industry further highlighted the lack of control over one’s life and income, prompting many to reevaluate their careers.
Recognizing the lack of mentorship during her transition, Walker launched The Hollywood Second Act Podcast. The show features interviews with industry veterans who have successfully pivoted to new careers, emphasizing the importance of building an authentic life. Walker also completed a coaching program to better assist others in their career transitions.
While still occasionally working in the industry for benefits, Walker now focuses on her coaching and podcast ventures. She works with clients both in and outside of Hollywood, helping them navigate the challenges and rewards of career changes.
Walker’s personal experience has underscored the importance of community support during transitions. Through her work, she aims to provide the guidance and resources she wished she had during her own pivot, helping others find fulfillment and happiness in new career paths.
