Google CEO Hails AI as “Most Transformative Technology” at UN Summit
At the UN Summit of the Future, Google CEO Sundar Pichai declared artificial intelligence (AI) as “the most transformative technology yet,” highlighting its potential to drive sustainable development and economic progress worldwide.
Pichai outlined several opportunities for AI, including improving access to information in native languages, accelerating scientific discoveries, and enhancing disaster response systems. He emphasized AI’s role in fueling economic growth across various sectors.
While acknowledging potential risks associated with AI, such as deep fakes, Pichai notably omitted discussion of the technology’s environmental impact. Instead, he focused on the need to prevent a global “AI divide” between nations with varying levels of technological advancement.
To address this concern, Google announced the creation of a $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund. This initiative aims to expand AI education and training worldwide through partnerships with local nonprofits and non-governmental organizations.
Pichai also advocated for “smart product regulation” to mitigate potential harms while avoiding protectionist policies that could limit AI’s benefits. He cautioned that improper regulation might exacerbate the AI divide and restrict the technology’s positive impact.
As AI continues to evolve rapidly, Pichai’s remarks underscore the critical balance between harnessing its potential and addressing associated challenges on a global scale.
