Fox News Navigates Democratic Convention Coverage Amid Audience Expectations
Fox News Channel faces a unique challenge as it covers the Democratic National Convention, balancing its predominantly conservative viewership with the task of reporting on a party energized by its electoral prospects.
The network’s coverage of the convention’s initial days has been marked by criticism from its personalities, who have described the proceedings as “boring” and filled with “hate.” Much of the focus has been directed towards demonstrations outside the arena, while many speakers inside have gone unheard on air.
Fox’s telecast highlights the inherent difficulties in covering news events on networks that blend breaking news with partisan political commentary. This challenge is not unique to Fox, as evidenced by MSNBC’s coverage of the Republican convention last month, where certain speakers were cut off or ignored in favor of critical discussions.
The network’s audience has historically shown a tendency to tune out news that doesn’t align with their beliefs, as seen with the January 6 committee hearings. This trend appears to be continuing, with Fox’s viewership for the first night of the Democratic convention significantly lower than that of the Republican convention a month prior.
Fox News hosts have been direct in their commentary on the Democratic event. Jesse Watters of “The Five” stated, “You can’t believe anything the Democrats tell you. Everything is a lie,” while Sean Hannity described the convention as featuring “far-left radical protesters outside and manufactured unity, deception and lying inside.”
Despite these challenges, Fox News reports an increase in bookings of Democratic guests for interviews during the convention week. The network maintains that it has the same on-the-ground presence for the DNC as it did for the Republican convention.
Fox has carried some key moments of the convention, including President Biden’s speech and surprise appearances by Vice President Harris. Speeches by Barack and Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were also broadcast in full. However, several other podium appearances covered by other networks went unheard on Fox News Channel.
Media analysts note that Fox’s approach to convention coverage mirrors that of left-leaning networks in their coverage of Republican events. This strategy reflects a broader trend in cable news, where networks cater to their core audience’s preferences and expectations.
As the convention continues, Fox News Channel’s coverage will likely remain a balancing act between reporting on the event and maintaining its audience’s loyalty, a concern that has been particularly acute since the 2020 presidential election.
