FEMA Workers Face Threats in Hurricane Helene Aftermath
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) workers have encountered armed individuals and threats while providing aid in the wake of Hurricane Helene, prompting operational changes and law enforcement intervention in Tennessee and North Carolina.
In Elk Mills, Tennessee, reports of armed individuals harassing FEMA workers led to the establishment of a 24-hour command post by the Carter County Sheriff’s office. While no arrests were made, the incident raised concerns about worker safety.
A separate incident in Lake Lure, North Carolina, resulted in the arrest of William Parsons for allegedly threatening FEMA aid workers. Parsons, who reportedly believed false social media claims about FEMA withholding aid, was charged with a misdemeanor for causing public terror.
FEMA has been combating disinformation about its hurricane response efforts. As a precautionary measure, the agency implemented temporary operational changes in western North Carolina to ensure worker safety. After a thorough assessment, workers have since returned to the field.
Hurricane Helene has left a trail of destruction across six states, claiming at least 246 lives, with North Carolina bearing the brunt of the impact. Approximately 90 individuals remain unaccounted for in the state as search efforts continue.
The incident involving Parsons highlights the dangers of misinformation. He allegedly made a social media post calling for action against FEMA and was arrested with firearms in his possession. Claims of his involvement in volunteer relief efforts were disputed by law enforcement.
Parsons has been released on bond and appointed a public defender. Initial reports suggesting militia involvement have been debunked, with authorities confirming Parsons acted alone. The public defender’s office has yet to comment on the case.
As recovery efforts continue, authorities stress the importance of relying on official sources for information and urge the public to cooperate with aid workers to ensure a swift and safe recovery process.
