Nancy Becker, a resident of the Sun City Hilton Head community for residents over 55, was tragically mauled to death by an alligator in August 2022. Her family is blaming the developer’s man-made ponds for her untimely demise.
The incident has sparked outrage among members of the South Carolina retirement home community and beyond as they demand answers from both local officials and developers alike. Many are questioning why such large bodies of water were built so close to homes without proper safety measures being put in place first.
Becker’s family is now calling on state legislators to pass laws that would require all new developments with man-made ponds or other bodies of water near residential areas to have appropriate fencing or barriers installed before occupancy begins. They believe this could help prevent similar tragedies from occurring again in the future and honor their beloved Nancy’s memory at the same time.
In addition, many people are also urging wildlife experts to take action against these dangerous predators before more innocent lives are lost due to human negligence when it comes to development projects near wild animal habitats like those found here at Sun City Hilton Head Community.
