Scientists have been experimenting with an actual tractor beam to clean up space junk. This technology has the potential to revolutionize how we manage debris in orbit. From their experiments, the researchers calculate that their tractor beam could be used to move debris weighing several tons.
The team of scientists developed a device capable of generating a powerful acoustic wave that can create an invisible force field around objects in its path and pull them towards it, much like a real-life version of Star Trek’s famous “tractor beams”. The research team tested out this concept on small pieces of metal and plastic debris orbiting Earth at speeds over 28,000 kilometers per hour (17,500 miles per hour). They were able to successfully slow down and capture these objects using only sound waves generated by the device!
This technology offers us new ways of dealing with dangerous orbital clutter without having to physically touch or transport it back down from space – something that is currently impossible due to cost constraints or technical challenges associated with sending spacecraft into orbit. It also provides us with another tool for managing our ever-growing population of satellites as well as other manmade items floating around our planet’s atmosphere, such as spent rocket stages or defunct satellites no longer functioning properly but still posing risks if they collide into operational spacecraft.
