AI Pioneer Criticizes Elon Musk for Tesla Self-Driving Claims
Yann LeCun, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence and Meta’s AI chief, has publicly criticized Elon Musk for what he describes as repeated false promises regarding Tesla’s fully-automated driving capabilities. LeCun’s comments shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding Musk’s claims about Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” (FSD) technology.
In a recent statement, LeCun accused Musk of consistently misleading the public about the timeline for fully-automated Teslas. “I’ve kept lying to you again and again about Tesla’s ‘Full Self Driving’ capabilities for the last 8 years, but you should believe everything I say about politics and everything else,” LeCun said, paraphrasing what he perceives as Musk’s stance.
LeCun’s critique is part of a broader conversation about Musk’s unfulfilled promises in the realm of self-driving technology. Dan O’Dowd, a software CEO and known Tesla critic, has also weighed in, referring to Musk as a “snake oil salesman.” O’Dowd’s detailed analysis tracks Musk’s recent claims about FSD, highlighting inconsistencies and unfulfilled promises.
One specific claim under scrutiny is Musk’s June announcement about the introduction of “Actually Smart Summon (ASS)” in FSD v12, which was supposed to allow consumers to summon their car using computer vision without a driver. Despite Musk’s July statement that the feature would be available “next month,” it has yet to materialize. O’Dowd also points out that such a feature is not legally permitted on public roads.
When faced with criticism from a Tesla fan for his comments, LeCun clarified his position. He stated that while he doesn’t hate Musk, he does take issue with what he perceives as dishonesty. LeCun expressed appreciation for Musk’s contributions in other areas, including Tesla’s electric vehicles, SpaceX rockets, and Starlink satellite network, demonstrating a nuanced perspective on Musk’s various ventures.
This latest critique follows a previous incident where Musk accused LeCun of “going soft” on AI issues, further highlighting the ongoing tensions between these two influential figures in the tech industry.
As the debate continues, it underscores the importance of responsible communication and realistic expectations in the rapidly evolving field of autonomous vehicle technology.
