DuckDuckGo Expands AI-Generated Answers, Integrates Chatbot into Search Experience
DuckDuckGo, the privacy-focused search engine, has announced the full integration of AI-generated answers into its platform, marking a significant expansion beyond its initial beta phase. The company revealed that these AI-powered responses will now draw information from a wider array of websites, moving beyond the previous reliance on Wikipedia as the primary source.
In a move to enhance user experience, DuckDuckGo is also set to incorporate web search capabilities within its AI chatbot, Duck.ai, which has simultaneously exited its beta stage. This integration represents a strategic shift in how the company approaches search and AI-assisted interactions.
The journey towards AI-assisted answers began in 2023 with the introduction of DuckAssist. This feature aims to provide users with concise responses, similar to Google’s AI Overviews, while maintaining user control over the visibility of these AI-generated results. Currently, these answers appear in approximately 20% of searches, with the company planning a cautious increase in frequency.
Duck.ai, the company’s chatbot, offers users the ability to engage in follow-up questions, creating a conversational experience. In line with DuckDuckGo’s privacy-centric approach, no account is required to use Duck.ai, and users can switch between different AI models while maintaining anonymity. The company has established agreements with AI providers to ensure user data is not utilized for training purposes.
Recent enhancements to Duck.ai include a “Recent Chats” feature, which stores conversations locally on the user’s device. Looking ahead, DuckDuckGo plans to introduce web search support, voice interaction for mobile users, and image upload capabilities. While Duck.ai remains a free service, the company is considering offering access to advanced AI models through a subscription model.
Unlike some tech giants that have launched separate AI chatbot applications, DuckDuckGo is pursuing an integrated approach. The company envisions a unified experience that seamlessly blends search and chat functionalities within a single app. Users can access the chatbot via the Duck.ai website or the DuckDuckGo browser, with AI-assisted answers readily available in the main search engine.
As DuckDuckGo continues to evolve its AI offerings, the company remains committed to its core principles of user privacy and data protection, setting it apart in the increasingly AI-driven search landscape.
