Detroit Judge Returns to Bench After Controversial Incident

Detroit judge Kenneth King has returned to the bench following a temporary removal stemming from a controversial incident last summer. King, who lost his courtroom duties in August, has been reassigned to handle minor offenses such as speeding tickets.

The judge’s return comes after undergoing social-emotional training, a measure implemented in response to the August incident. Chief Judge William McConico acknowledged King’s preparation for his new role, stating that the judge is ready to resume his duties in a limited capacity.

King’s attorney, Todd Perkins, emphasized the judge’s willingness to work in any capacity and his commitment to teamwork within the court system.

The incident that led to King’s temporary removal involved a 15-year-old girl, Eva Goodman, who was on a field trip to the courthouse. King singled out Goodman for falling asleep and having what he perceived as a bad attitude. In a livestreamed video, he ordered the girl to be placed in jail clothes and handcuffs, threatening her with juvenile detention before ultimately releasing her.

The girl’s mother, Latoreya Till, later explained that her daughter’s fatigue might have been due to their lack of a permanent address. Following public backlash, King issued a public apology for his actions.

In response to the incident, Till has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $75,000 for inflicting fear and severe emotional distress on her daughter.

As King returns to his judicial duties, albeit in a limited capacity, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in the justice system, particularly when dealing with minors.
