Human Rights Campaign Reports Progress in LGBTQ+ Workplace Equality Amid Conservative Pushback
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has released its latest Corporate Equality Index, revealing an increase in benefits and protections for LGBTQ+ employees across the United States. However, the report comes amid growing efforts by conservative activists to discourage company participation in the index.
McDonald’s has become the latest major corporation to withdraw from providing information for the evaluation, following in the footsteps of other industry giants such as Walmart, Ford, and Harley-Davidson. Despite these withdrawals, the HRC continues to rate companies based on publicly available information.
The index has faced criticism from conservative groups opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This pushback has intensified following the 2023 Supreme Court decision on affirmative action, with some companies citing legal precedents to scale back their diversity policies.
Despite these challenges, the HRC reports continued progress and participation in its index. The organization announced that 72 new employers have joined for the 2025 index, with an increase in the number of companies receiving perfect scores.
The scoring criteria for the index include anti-discrimination policies and health benefits, with recent additions such as gender transition guidelines. The HRC notes a significant uptick in companies adopting these guidelines.
David Glasgow, an expert in the field, commented on the trend of companies adjusting their DEI programs. “While some firms are making changes, the majority are maintaining their efforts despite the current challenges,” Glasgow stated.
The Corporate Equality Index, which debuted in 2002, has played a crucial role in shaping workplace benefits for LGBTQ+ employees. As the index evolves, it continues to influence corporate policies and practices across the nation.
As companies navigate the complex landscape of workplace equality, the HRC remains committed to monitoring and scoring their efforts, ensuring continued progress in LGBTQ+ rights and protections in the corporate world.
