The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has revealed that the cause of Coolio’s death on 28 September 2022 was an accidental overdose of fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine. The 54-year-old rapper, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., passed away at his home in Las Vegas.
Coolio rose to fame with his 1995 hit single “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance and sold more than six million copies worldwide. He had continued to make music until recently when he announced he would be taking a break from recording new material due to health issues.
The coroner ruled that Coolio died from “acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine.” Fentanyl is an opioid pain medication used as an anesthetic or sedative; it can be up to 100 times stronger than morphine and is often mixed with other drugs without the user knowing it contains opioids – making overdoses much more likely. Heroin is also a highly addictive and dangerous drug made from morphine; while methamphetamine (also known as crystal meth) increases alertness, concentration, and energy levels but can lead to serious physical problems, such as heart attack or stroke if taken in large doses over long periods.
Coolio will be remembered fondly by many fans around the world who enjoyed his unique style of rap music infused with funk elements during its peak years in 1990s hip-hop culture.
