CNN Plans New Streaming Service Amid Digital Transformation
CNN is set to launch a new streaming service, marking a significant step in its digital transformation strategy. This move comes as part of a broader restructuring plan within the network, aiming to provide news programming accessible across various devices.
The initiative follows CNN’s previous venture into streaming with CNN Plus, which was launched in 2022 but ceased operations after just one month. Details remain unclear on whether the new service will mirror CNN’s linear content or focus on original programming.
CEO Mark Thompson emphasized the significant global demand for the new service, stating that more information on content and distribution partnerships will be revealed in the coming months.
In addition to the streaming service, CNN is expanding its digital footprint. Alex MacCallum is slated to introduce the network’s first lifestyle-oriented digital product, signaling a major shift towards digital video content.
The restructuring plan, however, comes with workforce changes. CNN will lay off approximately 200 employees, representing about six percent of its staff. Despite these cuts, the network’s total headcount is expected to remain stable due to a $70 million investment from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.
This strategic move reflects a broader industry trend as traditional linear TV networks adapt to the rise of streaming platforms. CNN has already implemented a partial paywall for its online articles, and competitors like CNBC have launched their own subscription-based streaming services.
