Clovis Unified School Board’s Longest-Serving Member Announces Re-election Bid
Dr. Steven Fogg, the longest-serving member of the Clovis Unified School Board, has announced his intention to run for a third term. Fogg, an ophthalmologist and owner of an eye care practice with over 100 employees, was first elected to the board in 2016 during the district’s “at-large” elections.
Fogg’s decision to seek re-election is rooted in personal gratitude towards the district’s teachers who helped his son, as well as his ongoing mentorship of students aspiring to become physicians. He is currently running unopposed for Clovis Unified’s Area 5.
As the most senior member of a relatively young board, Fogg emphasizes the importance of training new members in Clovis Unified’s collaborative approach. He stresses the need for a unified vision focused on student achievement, welfare, and well-being, which he believes is crucial for effective administration and school performance.
The transition from “at-large” to “trustee-region” voting has raised concerns for Fogg. He worries about potential increased division and conflict within the board, citing negative impacts on student achievement and board cooperation observed in similar transitions elsewhere. Despite these concerns, Fogg remains committed to maintaining a unified vision and guiding the board in upholding Clovis Unified’s values.
Clovis Unified faces several challenges, including rapid growth due to its success and reputation. Financial constraints in building new schools, exacerbated by inflation, and balancing population growth with the need for smaller classrooms are among the key issues. While reluctant to ask for additional funding, Fogg acknowledges it may become necessary.
The district also grapples with tensions between state mandates and local conservative values. Fogg notes the district’s efforts to comply with state laws while meeting local expectations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining certain conduct and values in schools.
Regarding teachers’ unionization, Fogg relies on data showing no correlation between unionization and increased student achievement. He advocates for direct communication with teachers to address their concerns, emphasizing his approach to accessibility and responsiveness.
As he seeks re-election, Fogg reaffirms his dedication to maintaining Clovis Unified’s values and vision, with a continued focus on student achievement and well-being. His campaign underscores his commitment to the district and its community.
