Former Netball Star Warns of Heat Stroke Dangers as Climate Change Threatens Athletes
Eight years after a career-ending heat-related illness, former professional netball player Amy Steel continues to grapple with long-term health issues. As global temperatures rise, Steel is speaking out to raise awareness about the dangers of heat stroke among athletes.
In 2016, during a sweltering game where temperatures soared above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, Steel collapsed in the stadium parking lot. Despite officials deeming the conditions safe to play, the packed arena and physical exertion pushed Steel’s body to its limits.
“The stadium felt stifling even before the game started,” Steel recalled. “Players were grabbing pieces of ice to cool themselves down.”
Netball, a popular sport in Australia and England similar to basketball but with no dribbling and a ring instead of a hoop, had been Steel’s passion for over a decade. However, that fateful day marked the end of her professional career.
Heat stroke occurs when body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, potentially causing severe damage to vital organs. For those who survive the immediate danger, the effects can be long-lasting and life-altering.
Steel now struggles with ongoing health issues. “When my heart rate and body temperature start to rise, my body rebels and starts to shut down,” she explained. Her once-intense workout routine has been replaced by light yoga and walks.
Experts suggest that heat stroke can trigger a cytokine storm, leading to a cascade of health problems. Steel experienced tonsilitis, a recurrence of glandular fever, and kidney inflammation for two years following her collapse.
As climate change continues to push global temperatures higher, Steel emphasizes the importance of recognizing heat stroke symptoms. “It’s been quite debilitating and life-changing,” she said. “I want other athletes to be aware of the long-term effects of heat-related illnesses.”
With her story, Steel hopes to educate athletes and sports organizations about the potentially devastating consequences of pushing through extreme heat conditions, urging them to prioritize player safety in an increasingly warming world.
