Travel Blogger Helene Sula Embraces Child-Free Lifestyle, Pursuing Global Adventures
In a surprising twist on the traditional American dream, travel blogger Helene Sula and her husband Michael have chosen a life of global exploration over parenthood. The couple, who met as high school sweethearts, initially envisioned a future with children but found their priorities shifting as they embraced international living and travel.
Sula, author of “Two O’Clock on a Tuesday at Trevi Fountain: A Search for an Unconventional Life Abroad,” began her journey into travel blogging in 2011. This venture would eventually pave the way for the couple’s move to Heidelberg, Germany, in 2016, marking the beginning of their expatriate lifestyle.
As the blog “Helene In Between” gained traction, Michael joined his wife in managing the growing business. The couple’s flexible schedules allowed for extensive travel, leading them to spend three years in Germany before embarking on a four-year RV journey across the United States. They have since settled in Oxford, England, continuing their international adventures.
The decision to remain child-free was not immediate for Sula. Initially assuming she would have children later in life, she found herself questioning this path as she entered her late 20s. “I realized I didn’t have a strong maternal desire,” Sula explained. “Meeting other child-free individuals helped me see that there were alternative life paths.”
Sula emphasizes that her choice is not a judgment on parenthood, acknowledging the incredible and selfless nature of raising children. However, she believes that having children should stem from a deep desire, given the demands of parenting.
Addressing societal expectations, Sula maintains close friendships with parents while challenging the notion that children are necessary for care in old age. She advocates for self-reliance and financial planning as alternatives.
“I’m content and excited about my child-free life,” Sula affirmed. “It’s a valid choice, and I’ve found my own desires and goals to be equally worthy.”
Sula’s story highlights the evolving definition of fulfillment and success, showcasing how unconventional choices can lead to personal satisfaction and professional achievement in the modern world.
