The Rand Corporation’s extensive report from last year highlighted the potential for large language models, like GPT-4, to be leveraged in the planning of such attacks. While it acknowledged limitations in providing specific instructions for creating bioweapons, the report underlined the significant role AI could play in facilitating sinister agendas.
Senate committee hearings added fuel to the already smoldering debate. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s assertion about the imminent capacity of AI models to furnish instructions for advanced bioweapons sent shockwaves through the tech community. These participants were divided into groups, with some granted access to the GPT-4 model and others serving as a control group with internet access.
