Buster Posey Returns to Giants as President of Baseball Operations
In a surprising turn of events, former San Francisco Giants star catcher Buster Posey has been appointed as the team’s new president of baseball operations. The announcement comes just three years after Posey’s retirement, during which he initially expressed reluctance to take on such a role.
Posey, who replaces the recently dismissed Farhan Zaidi, cited a desire to be part of a team again as his motivation for accepting the position. His philosophy centers on thorough preparation, maintaining high standards for fundamentals, and prioritizing players’ needs.
One of Posey’s first tasks will be hiring a new general manager, as Pete Putila will not return to that role but will assume different duties within the organization. While Posey expressed admiration for current manager Bob Melvin, discussions about Melvin’s contract status beyond 2025 are not an immediate priority.
The Giants, who achieved a franchise-record 107 wins in Posey’s final season as a player in 2021, finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 80-82 record. All-Star pitcher Logan Webb expressed enthusiasm about Posey’s return, anticipating positive changes in team leadership.
Posey’s three-year deal comes with no contingencies, and he will maintain his position on the ownership board, recusing himself from meetings if conflicts arise. His influence has already been felt in player acquisitions, including his role in securing Matt Chapman’s $151 million, six-year contract.
The former catcher’s decision to take on this role was supported by his wife Kristen, with the Posey family relocating back to the Bay Area from Georgia. Posey, a decorated player with multiple accolades including the 2012 NL MVP, was originally the Giants’ fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft.
As he steps into his new role, Posey is also completing his degree in social science from Florida State University through online courses. His vision for the organization includes building a strong, experienced staff and empowering everyone within the Giants’ system.
Posey emphasized the importance of baseball in connecting generations and its entertainment value. He plans to implement a blend of scouting and analytics in the Giants’ front office approach.
Giants Chairman Greg Johnson praised Posey’s competitive spirit and desire to win, highlighting the former player’s request for a more hands-on role in building the club and willingness to be accountable for baseball decisions.
This appointment marks a significant moment for the Giants organization, with Posey’s leadership and vision expected to shape the team’s future in the coming years.
