Pandemic Pivot: Broadway Couple Finds Success in RV Renovations
In an unexpected turn of events, former Broadway performer Amelia Bay-Brown and her husband David, a hairstylist, have transformed their careers during the pandemic by venturing into the world of RV renovations. The couple’s journey began with the purchase of a 1979 Dodge Cruise Master, which they renovated and sold for a profit, kickstarting a successful business venture.
Over the past five years, the Bay-Browns have renovated 17 RVs, with costs and profits varying based on the extent of each project. Their inspiration came from a rented RV during a 2020 trip, leading them to purchase their first vehicle in poor condition. Undeterred by their lack of experience, the couple taught themselves renovation skills through online resources and community support.
As their business grew, the Bay-Browns traveled across the country, living in a motorhome purchased with their profits. They focused on creating personalized, home-like interiors for clients, often including aesthetic upgrades and space maximization techniques. Their projects ranged from soundproofing to creating multi-functional spaces, catering to the unique needs of each client.
The couple’s clientele expanded nationwide, with notable projects including “Jute,” a library-themed RV with a patio deck that sold for $40,000, and “Elle,” featuring high-end finishes and custom furniture for a Utah couple. Their most expensive project to date, “Oakley,” boasted custom woodwork and sold for an impressive $60,000.
Recently, the Bay-Browns have returned to New York, applying their RV renovation skills to apartment projects in the city. Their focus has shifted to maximizing small spaces in urban environments, completing projects such as children’s bedrooms and multifunctional guest room/office combinations. This transition highlights their ability to adapt their unique design approach to new challenges in the ever-changing real estate market.
As the Bay-Browns continue to evolve their business, their story serves as an inspiring example of resilience and adaptability in the face of unexpected career changes brought on by the global pandemic.
