Olympic Breaker Rachael “Raygun” Gunn Faces Online Backlash After Paris Games
Australian breaker Rachael Gunn, known professionally as “Raygun,” has found herself at the center of controversy following her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Gunn, who represented Team Australia in breaking’s Olympic debut, faced a wave of online harassment and misinformation after her elimination from the competition.
Gunn’s Olympic journey came to an end after sustaining three losses in the round-robin portion of the event, failing to advance further. Following her performance, social media platforms were flooded with memes and false claims about her qualification process.
In response to the growing backlash, Gunn addressed her supporters and critics alike in an Instagram video. She expressed gratitude to her fans and acknowledged the hate and harassment she had received, stating her intention to “bring some joy” to viewers despite the negativity.
The situation escalated with the creation of a Change.org petition titled “Hold Raygun Rachel Gunn & Anna Mears Accountable for Unethical Conduct Olympic Selection.” The petition, which garnered over 56,000 signatures before its removal, made unfounded claims about Gunn’s qualification process and her husband’s involvement in judging.
These allegations were swiftly debunked by official statements from AUSBreaking, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). The organizations clarified that Gunn had legitimately qualified by winning the 2023 WDSF Breaking Oceania Championship and that her husband, Samuel Free, was not involved in judging the event.
AOC CEO Matt Carroll strongly condemned the petition and expressed support for both Gunn and fellow Olympian Anna Meares. AUSBreaking released detailed statements refuting claims about Gunn’s leadership roles and outlining the transparent qualifying process.
As the controversy continues to unfold, Gunn has announced plans to remain in Europe for several weeks of “preplanned downtime.” She has requested that the press refrain from harassing her family, friends, and the breaking community.
The incident highlights the challenges athletes face in the age of social media, where misinformation can spread rapidly and have real-world consequences. As the dust settles, the focus now turns to addressing online harassment in sports and ensuring the integrity of information surrounding Olympic athletes.
